چکیده

This paper addresses the hazards associated with aerosolized hydraulic fluids and other liquids designed to be relatively non-flammable with respect to flashpoint and vapor pressure. The studies presented seek to understand and quantify conditions and circumstances that can produce such hazardous conditions. US Navy personnel are particularly susceptible to fuel aerosol hazards due to the widespread use and storage of these materials on both ships and airbases [13]. As a result a great deal of research effort has been directed toward designing safer jet fuels, lube oils, and hydraulic fluids. Most of these approaches have focused on improving the thermodynamic properties of the liquids by increasing their flashpoint and lowering their liquid vapor pressure. This approach was used by the Department of Defense (DOD) to reduce aviation fires. The design and implementation of lower volatility aviation fuels such as JP5 (Navy) and JP8 (Air Force) helped to reduce fuel ignition caused by gunfire in combat and help increase fire safety aboard aircraft carriers [4].

Numerical Study of Spherical Vapor Layer Growth Due to Contact of a Hot Object and Water

Vapor film formation and growth due to contact of a hot body and other liquids arise in some industrial applications including nuclear fuel rods, foundry and production of paper. The possibility of a steam explosion remains in most of these cases which could result in injuries and financial damage. Due to the importance of such phenomenon, this study deals with vapor layer forming, growth, and ...

Fire and explosion risk assessment in a chemical company by the application of DOW fire and explosion index

Background: Fire and explosion hazards are extremely important in processing units. This study was performed to identify the risk centers, the potential damage caused by fire and explosion, and the days of production cessation in the processing company. Materials and Methods: The present qualitative case study was conducted using Dow’s index in 2015. The fire and explosion hazard index...

A Review of the Fire and Explosion Hazards of Particulates

Particulate fires and explosions cause substantial loss of life and property. With the goal of understanding, preventing, or at least mitigating particulate fire and explosion hazards, we review basics. We distinguish between ‘hazard’ and ‘risk’ and discuss the fire and explosion hazards of particulates, the many factors determining such hazards, hazard indexes, and ways to reduce fire and expl...

Pressure Dependence of Liquid Vapor Pressure: An Improved Gibbs Prediction

A new model for the vapor phase of a pressurized liquid called "the cluster model: which is originally introduced in this work, along with an accurate equation of state for the liquid phase called the LIR, is used to derive an accurate equation for the vapor pressure of liquid as a function of external pressure. The chemical Potential of both phase have been found to be in good agreement wi...
